How to Keep Your Car Cool in Summer

No one likes driving in a sweltering hot vehicle, and after parking in the sun it can be a real drag to get inside. Worse, an overheated vehicle can be a danger to itself. The last thing you want on a long road-trip this summer is for your engine to overheat, or worse. So just what can you do to keep your vehicle cool during the hottest days of the year? Join the service team here at Hinton Dodge Chrysler as we run down a few simple tips that will help you, and your ride, to beat the heat.
Find Shade
First, and perhaps most obviously, try to avoid parking in the sun. Whether it’s finding the shady part of the parking lot, or staying parked inside the garage, keep out of direct sunlight and that’ll help keep your car from turning into such an oven. Parking under trees can be tricky, because of sticky sap, leaves, and other detritus, but so long as your vehicle’s glass is mostly in the shade, you should be able to avoid the worst of the heat.
Cover Your Vehicle
Covering your vehicle, or even putting a shade in the windshield, can deflect out some of the light during the day, and help keep the interior temperature of the vehicle down. In particular, reflective shades that deflect light back out are particularly effective. Investing in window tinting is also a more permanent solution if you regularly have to park outside. Another option may be to crack a window open to allow the air to flow through the vehicle, but keep in mind that may open your vehicle to the risk of a break-in depending on where you’re parked.
Pre-Cooling
A lot of modern vehicles can be remotely started, and for many of them that includes the ability to get the climate control running before you get behind the wheel. Having the A/C running for even just a few minutes before you get inside can help make the cabin much more comfortable. Consider getting your vehicle’s HVAC system maintained during your spring maintenance interval, before you set out in the summer, to ensure it’s working properly.
