What to Do When Your Tire Blows Out

What to Do When Your Tire Blows Out
Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram vehicles are safe and reliable, but the fact is, they’re machines with many moving parts and components, and sometimes things go wrong. One of the most common issues you might encounter is a flat tire, which can be a real pain to deal with. Worse still, your tire can blow out while you’re driving, which isn’t just a nuisance – now it could be a serious danger. Join the service team here at
Hinton Dodge Chrysler as we walk you through what to do if your tire explodes while you’re cruising down the road.

How Do I Know My Tire Blew Out?

You’ll know if your tire blows out – there’ll be a loud bang when the tire pops, followed by the sound of the flat tire slapping against the road. You’ll probably also feel the explosion reverberate through the body of the vehicle, and your vehicle will start to slow and pull toward the direction of the flat.

Don’t Panic

Don’t immediately slam on the brakes – this can cause your vehicle to lose control as the flat fights against the other tires. Rather, keep your hands firmly on the wheel and accelerate slightly to make sure you’re in control; then take your foot off the gas and let the vehicle gradually in a controlled manner. As soon as it’s safe to do so, pull over to the right-hand side of the road and activate your emergency lights.

Change Your Tire

Many vehicles (such as Jeeps) have full additional tires readily available for just such an emergency, and many others offer smaller “donuts” as an emergency spare. If you are using a spare tire, remember they are not meant for high-speeds, long distances or regular use, and should only be used to get you to a service centre. If you aren’t comfortable changing a tire, or don’t know how, you should contact emergency roadside assistance for help. If it’s winter out, be sure to stay warm while you wait for assistance! Whatever you do, don’t attempt to drive anywhere on the blown out tire – you risk serious damage to your vehicle, and you’ll pose a risk to yourself and other drivers on the road.
