Canada’s changing season means your vehicle should have more than one pair of tires. There are three options to choose from: winter, all-season, and summer. All three have properties, like material and tread depth, that make them ideal for specific seasons. Winter Tires

Winter tires are crucial for safe driving in Canada’s ice-cold winter season. Winter tires are constructed with a soft rubber compound that stays flexible in freezing temperatures. These tires also feature large, deep tread and grooves. This allows the tires to bite the snow for superior grip, resulting in a shorter stopping distance and better overall vehicle control. It’s important to reserve these tires for the winter months as using them all year can wear them out. It’s recommended to swap your tires when the temperature starts dipping below 7 degrees.

All-Season Tires

All-season tires have the ability to take on changing but moderate conditions, like wet roads. These tires are made of a harder rubber than winter tires, allowing them to resist wearing down when the weather gets warmer. However, they lose traction when the weather gets colder than 7 degrees, making them ineffective for year-round use, especially during the winter months. While you can use them through spring, summer, and fall, you should swap your tires in the winter.

Summer Tires

Summer tires are ideal for taking on the hot weather. Since they’re made of a harder rubber compound, these tires can withstand the blaring sun without losing shape. They also provide superior traction on dry roads, thanks in part to their shallow tread patterns. This allows a large part of the tire to come in contact with the road, leading to a more responsive ride.
